MYTHS ABOUT TEETH CLEANING/SCALING

Everyday dentist encounters several assumptions from patients that are totally different from the science-such as extraction of teeth will affect your life, braces will hurt and so on. In this blog, we will clear the myths that are related to teeth cleaning/scaling which will make you believe how beneficial it is to your oral health.

  • Cleaning of teeth causes removal of outer layer of teeth (enamel):

Cleaning is performed with ultrasonic scaler that involves light, gentle mechanical vibrations which only removes plaque, tartar and stains from the tooth surface without affecting the outer layer of the teeth.

  • Teeth cleaning/Scaling is painful:

Scaling is a painless procedure that only tends to remove the plaque and calculus that is present on the tooth surface. If the deposits are present for a long time, it would have caused the gums to recede from the teeth. After the cleaning procedure, this area gets exposed. This may cause sensitivity which reduces within few days.

  • Teeth cleaning/Scaling makes teeth weak:

This is a common myth that patients have that scaling may lead to weakening and loosening of teeth which is not true. Basically, excess tartar that covers the teeth results in receding of gums. When scaling is done, as the tartar is removed it gives the feeling that your teeth are loosened. After cleaning, gums will gradually become healthy and re-attach itself to the teeth to make them stronger.

  • Teeth cleaning/Scaling creates gaps between the teeth:

Generally patients misunderstand that scaling leads to spacing between the teeth which is not true. Actual procedure involves removal of stains, plaque and tartar. Once they are removed, the inflamed gums become healthy and gets back to its normal position within a week or so.
